We love learning more about our contributors, and an interview seemed like a fun way to hear more about the writers and artists we publish, so we gave them a choice of questions to answer. We hope you also enjoy hearing more about the artists and their works. Check out Issue #27 for work from Horia Pop and more.
What was the inspiration for the piece published in the issue?
I (almost) never know in advance what I'm gonna be interested in, once I decide to go out and shoot. I really let my self wander and walk a lot until someone or something draws my eye and my heart. This is exactly what happened with this picture which is part of a series made under that same tunnel.
Who are some of your favorite writers or artists, and what do you like about them?
I will name a few here: C. Baudelaire, C. Bukowski the poets; P. Istrati, the wanderer, human lover; G. Orwell, the prophet; J. London, the dream adventurer; as far as photography goes, I have come to it, almost by chance, a year ago, and fell in love with the medium. I'll name but a few, all are dead, since I don't look for the actual ones, not to be influenced: R. Frank, G Winogrand, W. Evans, Brassaï.
What I love about them all, is the Heart they put into their work and their dedication to it.
What is your #1 advice for other writers or artists?
Cut off all the fat from your Heart; leave all belongings, family and friends behind at once; go into your Desert; wander until you meet your last defeat; greet your Cross with joy; suffer a lot up there, in the general indifference of the Human Eye; Bow your Head, think less, love more, let the Spirit take hold of you; come back into the World, go to your Brothers and share your Flame to ALL with humility and perseverance: you have something to say - at last!
